Tips from an Experienced Wedding Photographer

Planning a wedding involves juggling countless details. Few are as important—or as lasting—as your wedding photos. With the right timeline in place, you can ensure that every meaningful moment is beautifully captured. This can occur without the feeling of being rushed or overwhelmed.

As a professional wedding photographer, I’ve helped dozens of couples build wedding timelines that balance beauty, fun, and flow. Therefore, whether you’re booking 6 or 8 hours of coverage, here’s how to create a timeline that allows for stunning images—and an unforgettable experience.

1. Start with Your Ceremony Time and Work Backward

Your ceremony is the anchor of the day. Once you know when it begins, we can reverse-engineer the rest of the schedule to make everything run smoothly.

For example, if you’re planning an outdoor ceremony, aim for it to start 1–2 hours before sunset. This way, you’ll benefit from soft, flattering natural light.

Additionally, consider whether you’ll have a first look or go the traditional route. A first look allows you to complete many key portraits before the ceremony, which often leads to a more relaxed experience.

2. Build in Buffer Time

Things almost always take longer than expected on the wedding day. Therefore, I recommend adding 10–15 minute buffers between major moments.

For instance, getting dressed can take longer than planned, or travel time between venues might stretch. These buffers prevent stress and allow us to capture spontaneous, emotional moments without feeling rushed.

3. Suggested Photography Timeline

Here’s a sample 8-hour photography timeline that I’ve found works beautifully.

If you’re considering my 6-hour package, we’ll simply focus the timeline on the core events—usually starting with the ceremony and extending through the key parts of your reception.

4. Golden Hour Magic

Golden hour—typically the hour before sunset—is ideal for dreamy, romantic portraits. As a result, I always recommend setting aside 15 minutes for newlywed photos during this time.

Even if you’ve already done a first look, golden hour gives you a second chance for gorgeous lighting and a quiet, intimate moment together.

5. Family Photos: Keep It Organized

Family portraits go more smoothly when they’re planned ahead. To help, I’ll send you a simple form where you can list all the family combinations you’d like captured.

In addition, it’s helpful to assign a “family wrangler”—someone who knows everyone and can assist in gathering people efficiently. This way, we can move quickly and still make sure no one is missed.

6. Trust Your Photographer

I bring more than just a camera to your wedding—I bring years of experience, calm energy, and the ability to adapt quickly if things shift. Whether you choose my 6-hour or 8-hour coverage, I’ll work closely with you. Together we’ll build a personalized timeline that fits your unique day.
